Crawling underneath the sacred palanquin of Mazu This is one of the famous tradition during Mazu annual pilgrimage in Taiwan. The believers believe this would bring them wellness and luck. Folks from everywhere politely line up for blocks or miles and wait for long time. When the sacred palanquin approaches. The temple and voluntary staff would direct people to crawl down and wait for the sacred palanquin to pass above them. There are people who are ill or in wheelchairs. Others will include them to be in the line and the bearers will raise the palanquin higher to allow more space to go above them. In 2019, two most famous Mazu pilgrimage activities started on the same day (which is rare because the dates were chosen through temple ceremonies). In this picture it is the sacred palanquin of Baishatun Mazu (with another Mazu of the Mountain Side therein too). It has a nickname of “Pink Supercar” because the bearers walk very very fast and very long-distance everyday. I was deeply amazed and moved by the orderliness and patience/belief of these believers. And of course I also experienced this myself too.
